30th June 2023 – University of Winchester

The careers conference is a one-day CPD event designed to give insight into business, industry and how the world of work is changing.

Aimed at Careers Practitioners; Careers Leads; Teachers; Senior Leadership Teams; Enterprise Advisers and anyone interested in preparing young people for work and careers.

A wide range of speakers and seminars will be available on the day, with business leaders from across Hampshire bringing real world examples of how things are changing and what Careers Professionals need to be aware of.

Theme – The Future of Careers in an Advancing World

As we now face the climate crisis; ever-growing ageing populations; changes in thinking about work/life balance; shifting political climates across the world, as well as rapid advancements in robotics and automation advancement important questions need to be seriously considered when preparing young people for their future careers.

What jobs will no longer exist?

What skills will young people need to develop for emerging jobs?

What gaps will be left by the ageing population and what opportunities will it create?

As part of a sustainable lifestyle and forging “a positive career” will we start to measure success on what we give back and our place in society rather than the assets companies and individuals have?

Seminars

James Potter, The Linked In Man.

How LinkedIn Impacts You and Your Career

Everyone knows LinkedIn is important, it is the default place for business people and job hunters isn’t it?  It feels like everybody is on LinkedIn and we all do it – right? We all do what we think is right but deep down it niggles us. Are we doing it right? What is it for really? Are the people I want to meet on there? Who cares what I’m like on LinkedIn? What must I do? What shouldn’t I do? What about all these strangers that invite me to “connect”? What does that actually mean?

The answers to all these questions and more in a simple, highly caffeinated session from James Potter – The Linked In Man

Lesley Strachan, Lesley Strachan Coaching

How to Choose a Career You’ll Love

As an HE lecturer and Life Coach Lesley will share her experiences as to how students can become more engaged with their learning, and choose subjects and careers they are more likely to succeed in. The workshop will be story based with some simple exercises that will be of value to both delegates and those they advise.

Chris Hatter, Portsmouth International Port

Over half of the jobs in the Solent area are linked to the Maritime Industry and they pay a premium (50% more than average salaries in Portsmouth). Without shipping half the world would starve and the other half would freeze; this background has led to the industry being the biggest facilitator of globalisation and has been the driver for international banking, insurance and legal services to be developed. Greener shipping, digitalisation of maritime, autonomy, connectivity and systems thinking are all areas that are going through rapid development and implementation.

Employees have in the past ‘fallen into shipping’ unless they had a family member already in it. What are the current roles? How do you get into maritime? What skills are needed to enter the workforce today? What skills will be needed in the future? What are the pros and cons of maritime?

Piers Collins, Hundo Careers, Hundo.

The world of work has changed at pace over recent years. This will be further accelerated through the adoption of Web3 technology changing the way that the world uses the internet. Where does the next generation fit in all of this and how will their careers be impacted?’

Phil Clark, Embedded IT

Phil will cover where the industry has got to with regards to ChatGPT and other Artificial Intelligence platforms, and the likely impact this will have on jobs for the future and business overall.  With the AI revolution changing daily, its very difficult to predict what the future will look like, so Phil will cover off current technologies and their capabilities, some of the challenges with the industry and ethics / regulatory considerations, and where opportunities for young people are likely to be in 3-5 years time.

Tony Winterton, Home Instead

Tony is the Recruitment Manager for a Home Care Company called Home Instead Central Hampshire. He has worked in recruitment for over 30 years with the past 8 years in the Care Profession. His role is to recruit talented, caring and passionate new Care Professionals who are needed to deliver the high quality service Home Instead offers its clients.
