Businesses came together to provide a hands-on activity that gave young people the opportunity to explore the world of STEM at Hilton Ageas Hotel on Thursday 25th April 2019 for The Big Bang @ Solent.

Big Bang @ Solent is organised by EBP South and sponsored by Wartsila, SUN (Southern University Network) and Solent LEP.

The large annual STEM event attracted over 1000 students to take part in interactive STEM activities run by 40 different businesses. Businesses sponsoring and exhibiting welcomed the event as a great opportunity to up-skill young people.

Jacquie Jones, EBP South Project Manager said ‘The Big Bang @ Solent is a hugely popular event with schools and businesses. With research showing that the STEM skills shortage costs UK businesses around £1.5 billion per year this is a proactive established event that allows businesses to upskill young people.’

The Big Bang @ Solent organised by EBP South inspired young people into STEM to give them opportunity to learn the skills, subjects and courses they need to go into different STEM industries and for different STEM Careers.

Jade Fuller, Project Manager of Employment and Skills at Solent LEP said ‘It is vital for Employers and businesses to engage their future workforce and big Bang @ Solent provides a great opportunity for then to do this. The Solent LEP are proud to sponsor events that enable young people to meet with organisations to ensure that they are aware of the future career pathways available to them.’

Big Bang @ Solent is a local event regional event following on from the national Big Bang Birmingham. Big Bang gives young people, schools and teachers the opportunity to learn about STEM careers.

Anita James, Head of IT Strategy & Architecture at Kingfisher, who exhibited at the event said, ‘This is our fourth year at Big Bang it is a fantastic opportunity to open students’ eyes to the different STEM career options. The level of engagement is incredible and the general buzz on the day is infectious.
