Businesses Collaborate for Early Years STEM Careers

EBP South address the urgent need to increase engagement in STEM as STEM jobs are projected to grow by 8.8%.

EBP South in partnership with Portsmouth Water ran the hugely popular virtual Primary Schools' STEM Fair where 14 businesses came together to engage 531 primary pupils in STEM.

The annual EBP South’s Primary Schools’ STEM Fair in Partnership with Portsmouth Water has become a key tool for businesses long-term recruitment plans. Following the event 64% of pupils said they would now consider a career in STEM.

The event was fully booked with businesses and schools as both education and the STEM industry recognise the need to create engagement within STEM education for young people.

The Primary Schools’ STEM Fair in Partnership with Portsmouth Water is an interactive event delivered to pupils in primary schools across the Solent as part of EBP South’s early years education programme that connect businesses and schools.

Jacquie Jones, Project Manager for EBP South said, “The pupils loved the STEM activities and found them great fun and that is what this event is about. It’s important that when we sow the seed of STEM careers it’s in a fun way enabling them to enjoy it and think, I’d love to do this as my job!”

Portsmouth Water ran an activity that taught pupils how water is made safe to drink. Pupils participating had an introduction and overview from Portsmouth Water streamed into their classroom and with Portsmouth Water virtually on hand for any questions. Using a plastic bottle, sand, gravel, rocks and a coffee filter they were able to build a filter system and watch the dirty water become clean water.

Ian Limb, HR Manager, Portsmouth Water said “We are delighted to be the sponsor of the STEM Primary Schools Fair and despite the challenges this year due to the pandemic the fact that this was still delivered into the classroom was testament to the great work of EBP South, the schools and of the participating businesses.

Sponsoring events like STEM is really core to our principles of supporting the community and giving the next generation opportunities to see what is out there in the business world. Hopefully we will see some of them work for Portsmouth Water in the future.”
