EBP South’s biggest Get Inspired Portsmouth event took place at Portsmouth Guildhall in partnership with the Guildhall, Shaping Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council and BAE Systems Maritime Services on Wednesday 31st January 2018 raising the aspirations of 1600 young people.

The Guildhall was buzzing with 75 businesses providing interactive activities across 9 rooms giving young people a taster of careers to inspire them and raise their aspirations across a vast range of sectors.

Cath Longhurst, CEO of EBP South and Basingstoke Consortium said ‘Get Inspired Portsmouth plants the idea of a career/s with a young person. An example was when I spoke to a young person at the event I said do you know what you want to do and he replied ‘Yes, I want to be a cameraman. I’ve just tried it and I can do it.’ It’s examples like this that are what the event is all about.’

Some of the activities included creating a motorised paper plane with Eaton; practicing their filming skills with Highbury College; Hair Ott had mannequins with hair that they had to curl and set; and Biscoes Law Ltd had a role play with a judge where students took on the characters and had to decide who was guilty.

Donna Jones, Conservative Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said ‘It’s brilliant to be here today at the EBP South event with the title Get Inspired we have 1000 of students here today from Portsmouth and Surrounding areas.’

At Get Inspired Portsmouth young people found a potential job role that matched their skills they hadn’t heard of; their aspirations were raised when they enjoyed an activity that they realised they could do which they didn’t think they could do before; or they were just inspired by the vast range of opportunities that are available to them.

Mike Kingham, UK Engineering Manager from Eaton said ‘Get inspired has benefitted Eaton as it gives us the chance to engage with the young people of today to encourage them into science, technology and STEM subjects. It’s important to [Eaton] to get youngsters engaged in these areas from an early age and to keep their interest as they go through education for our future pipeline.’

The event was a great example of how businesses in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas can put into action Inspiring the Next Generation which was the key message from the Shaping Portsmouth conference.

EBP South who organise the free event would like to thank the businesses who gave up their time to attend, partners Shaping Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council, BAE Systems Maritime Services and Portsmouth Guildhall for generously donating the hire of Guildhall for the event.
