On the 5th and 6th March over 300 young people attended EBP South’s Solent Primary Schools’ STEM Fair at CEMAST, Lee-on-the-Solent. The event, which was sponsored by BAE Systems Maritime, Portsmouth Water, Fareham Borough Council and Fareham College featured local businesses providing engaging STEM activities that aimed to inspire and educate pupils about careers in STEM.
Sam Worsey, Early Careers Education & Skills Coordinator (Maritime Services) at BAE Systems Maritime said “BAE Systems Maritime were delighted to support this important event, encouraging the future generation of STEM professionals. The children were delighted by our Roving Robot activities; developing essential STEM skills in creativity, teamwork and staying positive. We hope to see many of them again in the future at BAE Systems!”
Heather McCarthy, HR, Community and Wellbeing Officer at Portsmouth Water said “Portsmouth Water have been proud sponsors of this event for years – it is something that as a STEM employer, we are passionate about. Our display encourages the kids to think strategically to insure the pipe network between the “houses” and the “reservoir” function efficiently and without leaks. Completing activities like this is great for building confidence and increasing interest in STEM subjects!”
The event, aimed at Primary School pupils in years 5 & 6 featured activities such as Build a Cruise Ship, Roving Robots, Reservoir Construction Challenge and Frauscher Axle Counting.
Sue Street from Peel Common Junior School said “Inspiring – you have made our children think outside the box. It’s been thought provoking about technology and the way industries are always moving forward. With innovative ideas, these are children of the future.”
Sam Carter, Flying Bull Academy said “What a fantastic day! Such variety on offer so everyone could engage, explore and develop their interest in STEM. Thank you.”
