Inspiring the next generation: EBP South connects young people with leading employers
The Portsmouth Guildhall was electric as 900+ students descended for EBP South’s ‘Get Inspired’ signature event. The event turned career planning into an interactive experience for students, sparking curiosity and helping to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace.
This high-impact event, a flagship in the EBP South inspiration series, connected local 11 to 16-year-olds with 25+ leading employers. The goal was simple but vital: to break the cycle where over a third of teenagers focus on just ten familiar job roles, and instead, open their eyes to the vast, exciting career landscape waiting for them right on their doorstep.
Hands-on discovery
The Guildhall was packed with interactive exhibits that turned career advice into a hands-on adventure. Students didn’t just hear about jobs; they experienced them through:
- Uncovering history with shipwreck science experiments.
- Engineering solutions with water network connection challenges.
- Mastering hospitality through professional mocktail making.
- Interactive wellbeing demos on the physical, mental, and social benefits of getting involved in mixed martial arts and regular gym-based training.
Sammy Ward, CEO of EBP South, shone a spotlight on how vital this event is to young people in Portsmouth and across Hampshire:
“Get Inspired Portsmouth is an exciting and innovative event which allows young people to have key interactions with businesses. This in turn helps young people to develop their employability skills and broadens their horizons about the job opportunities that are available to them.”
Bridging the gap between education and industry
By creating a space where fun meets future planning, EBP South is tackling future skills shortages head-on. The impact was immediate: over 90% of students surveyed reported discovering career paths they had never even heard of before the event.
The success of the day was bolstered by the support of our Sponsors BAE Systems Maritime and Partners The Guildhall Trust and Barratt David Wilson Homes.
