Primary school students from across Hampshire attend EBP South’s Primary Schools’ STEM Fair, in Partnership with Portsmouth Water!
EBP South’s Primary Schools’ STEM Fair, in Partnership with Portsmouth Water, took place at CEMAST, Fareham College on the 9th and 10th March 2022. 290 pupils from nine primary schools throughout Hampshire attended the event which aims to create awareness of and inspire young people about careers in STEM.
Year 6 Teacher, Corey Burns from The Flying Bull Academy said “The children have loved the activities throughout the day. It’s great for them to have a go at things they can’t access at home or at school. They’ve been inspired by the different careers and some are going home to research about colleges and STEM careers.”
At the event, which was sponsored by BAE Systems Maritime Services, Fareham College, Lenovo and Solent LEP , 17 organisations provided an exciting range of hands on activities for the young people to take part in. The activities included building and coding Lego robots, exploring osteoarchaeology, building a water supply system and exploring the story and science behind the Mary Rose. These engaging sessions gave students the opportunity to interact with different businesses and to develop their skills.
Sue Allery, HR Manager at event partner Portsmouth Water said “As a local company, we at Portsmouth Water, are proud to continue our long association with EBP and their STEM events for school children. We hope to leave them with an understanding of how the water supply network operates in harmony with the environment in a
fun and interactive way. This is all delivered by an enthusiastic team of volunteers from across the business who engage directly with our future generations.”
Young people are often not fully aware of the different job roles and career paths available to them. This event allows businesses to connect with primary school pupils in their local area and educate them about the STEM careers that are on their doorstep. Jacquie Jones, Project Manager at EBP South said “This event provides students with the opportunity to learn about different STEM career paths which they would not normally be aware of. It inspires them to think of new career paths and options and to see the many different ways that they can use their skills.”
